A.M.I.G.O.S.A Multilingual International Guidance Outreach Service
The A.M.I.G.O.S. Project connects high-achieving Spanish language students at area high schools with immigrant English language learners at area middle schools so that the high school students may provide academic support in the classroom and role modeling in life for the immigrant youths, giving them an equal opportunity to achieve their educational goals.
The pilot program with Tabor Academy in Marion, MA and New Bedford’s Roosevelt Middle School has proved to be mutually beneficial as the Tabor Academy students have the opportunity to participate in a multi-cultural exchange, and establish relationships with low-income and linguistically isolated New Bedford immigrant students who are not as privileged. The Tabor students have the opportunity to converse in Spanish in a real-world environment, around topics of mutual interest with other young people, enhancing their own language studies.
Roosevelt students show increased academic performance, higher attendance levels, and greater involvement in after-school activities. Parents and families of Roosevelt students have demonstrated significantly improved communication with teachers and administration and a more positive experience of the education system.
