Did you know Green Card holders should begin the process to renew their expiring Green Cards 6 months before the expiration date?

My Green Card is Expiring: What to do next

When you receive a Green Card, this makes you a lawful U.S. permanent resident for life, except in the rarest circumstances. However, as a Green Card holder, it is your responsibility to renew your Green Card before it expires so that you can live and work lawfully in the U.S. and re-enter the U.S. if you have been abroad.

10 year Green Card Holders must renew them by filing form I-90. You can file this online or by mail, along with the supporting documents necessary for your situationship. You may need to provide supporting documents if some of your legal information has changed. For example, if you got married or divorce you’ll need to send proof of name change, marriage certificate, divorce decree, ect.

How Long Before the Expiration Date Should I Renew?

The answer is about six months. Being mindful to processing time and unexpected delays, five to six months before the expiration days is the ideal window to file for a renewal. Anything before the six months runs the risk of being rejected by USCIS because it’s too early.
